John C. Wallingford, Ph.D.

John C. Wallingford, Ph.D., is an expert in the scientific and regulatory aspects of foods for special dietary uses, whose experience spans over 25 years at global nutrition companies and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He brings a comprehensive view to product development, from basic nutrition science and biology through clinical nutrition research and launch – encompassing product composition, safety of novel food components, labeling requirements and compliance with marketing codes, and nutrient declarations and claims for US and global markets.

Dr. Wallingford was Vice President of Scientific Affairs at Pfizer Nutrition, as well as Vice President of Regulatory, Government and Scientific Affairs at Wyeth Nutrition, where he led product registrations and approvals, ingredient approvals, and comments to regulatory rule-making across over 80 worldwide markets, as well as leading clinical and nutritional research. Earlier, Dr. Wallingford was Acting-Director of the Division of Technical Evaluation, Office of Food Labeling at US FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), leading a team in nutritional labeling of foods and dietary supplements, health claims, and food labeling. Dr. Wallingford also served in the Office of Special Nutritionals at FDA CFSAN, where he was a senior scientific reviewer for foods for special dietary purposes and author of health claims rules on omega-3 fatty acids.

Dr. Wallingford received his Ph.D. in metabolism and human nutrition from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he conducted his post-doctoral research at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health. He also holds a M.S. in nutrition from the University of California, Davis. He is a member of the American Society for Nutrition.
